Charles Broll is forming a global legal team from scratch, which includes individuals, processes, templates, law firm relationships, and ways of working. Charles is doing this in Chicago and London in his capacity as the first chief legal officer (CLO) at Tropicana Brands Group, a spin-off joint venture between PAI Partners (a French private equity company) and PepsiCo. In addition to his role as CLO, he also serves as the secretary to the joint venture board and holds similar positions in other Tropicana subsidiary companies. Charles initially joined as an advisor to PAI in 2021 and officially assumed the role of Tropicana CLO in 2022.   
 
Charles has extensive experience across government, business, and law. He has also held leadership roles throughout his career with responsibilities for non-legal operations such as regulatory compliance, government affairs, real estate and facilities management, retirement benefits, safety, security, and sustainability. Furthermore, Charles has been able to apply a global perspective based on his professional experiences. Prior to his role with Tropicana in Chicago, Charles has been based in New York, Washington, Hong Kong, Bangkok, and London. He has held roles with responsibilities for various geographic regions, including Eastern Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, China, India, Russia, and Southeast Asia.   
 
Charles began his career in 1991 in government as a legislative aide to then-Senator Biden in Washington. After that, he returned to Duke Law School and subsequently joined Hunton & Williams (now Hunton Andrews Kurth) in New York in 1997. Later, he was assigned to Hunton’s satellite offices in Hong Kong and Bangkok, where he worked on project finance, M&A, IPOs, and general corporate transactions. He transitioned to an in-house role when he became the Asia regional counsel for firm client Diageo in 2003. Subsequently, he relocated to Diageo’s London headquarters between 2006 and 2008, where he handled investor relations, NYSE and LSE securities filings, and global compliance. Following this, he returned to the US and served as the assistant general counsel for Diageo North America until he moved to Nestle in 2010. At Nestle, he served as the EVP and general counsel at Nestle Waters North America until its sale to private equity in 2021.   
 
Throughout his career, Charles has worked on many significant transactions and litigations around the globe, but he prefers to be recognised for his efforts in building and growing diverse talent, providing mentorship, and preparing his teams for larger leadership roles. Many of his hires have gone on to serve as general counsel with other businesses, including BIC, Blue Cloud, Body Armor, Cedar Fair Entertainment, Diageo North America, Edgewell, Mars North America, Nespresso, WWE, and others.
