Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?

I believe that the digitalisation of processes will have two immediate impacts – increased security and compliance. Integrating technology in the legal sector should be a requirement for every company, especially its legal department. We have combined all the legal area processes – such as contracting, shareholder relationships, board of directors, and issuance of legal opinions – into our IT protocols. Furthermore, we believe that the implementation of AI in work processes related to legal affairs has excellent relevance, and we are working to introduce it into our risk detection and management framework. It is essential to develop a deep understanding of the legal and commercial implications of NFT and metaverses and how they impact our audiovisual sector. We have launched a training programme within the legal department concerning new technologies, with the aim of positively impacting our business and operations.

How do you suggest in-house lawyers build strong relationships with business partners?

Our in-house legal team has a crucial role in driving the group’s growth. We tend to overcome the traditional structures that see the in-house team only involved in legal matters; instead, it assists in developing the business and more efficient systems. We believe in an active partnership between in-house lawyers and business partners to create added value for the company.

What are the most significant cases or projects you have been involved in recently?

We are a multidisciplinary team, and consequently, we are involved with multiple cases in several areas. We have carried out many audiovisual projects in advisory, legal, and financial structuring. Recently, we have been significantly engaged in contractual matters – we made over 400 contracts. Additionally, we have been responsible for the tax lease management in fiction projects such as “El Zorro” and “Montecristo”; we also provided the same services to produce eight films between 2021 and 2022. The Madrid Content city signed the beginning of the largest real estate investment project in the audiovisual sectors in Spain and Europe – 10 film sets of 1,200 and 2,000 square meters each, several office buildings, and warehouses; one of the most advanced post-production centres ever built. This project keeps growing with great prospects. It has allowed the implementation of Netflix in Europe, choosing our facilities as their European headquarters. Our legal team has been responsible for securing structured funds from the US, a critical milestone that allows us to develop new projects and investments.
