About

Alberto Mata Rodríguez joined Deutsche Pfandbriefbank (pbb) in 2015 following a successful private practice career as a senior associate of the banking and finance department of Gómez-Acebo & Pombo. ‘My experience in finance transactions, together with my dual education in business and finance law and my desire to assume further responsibilities in an international financial institution lead me to join pbb,’ he says.

‘The transition from private practice to in-house has presented different challenges for me and has been rich in experience and projects – due to the different legal skills and knowledge required on a daily basis in a listed bank which is one of the largest issuers of covered bonds in Europe’. Mata was invited to develop pbb’s legal department following the bank’s restructure and IPO in 2015, which required significant improvement on an operational level.

This meant, among other things, the implementation of the legal policy, review of internal legal templates and local legal protocols as well as a reassessment of legal risk in Spain, the inclusion of the legal department in local decision-making and solving-problem processes, and the enhancement of legal awareness in different departments of the bank. Another major highlight during Mata’s three-year tenure at the bank involves his appointment as a member of pbb’s Spanish executive committee.

According to Mata ‘this reflects not only the trust of the bank in my business-oriented legal knowledge and experience but also its conviction that legal input is necessary in the many strategic business decisions of the bank and its internal procedures’. Mata and his team have also impressed with their work, alongside the origination and credit risk departments, on leading real estate and public finance transactions in different jurisdictions.

‘The legal department works closely alongside the other departments on each transaction as part of a deal team, and this has served to sharpen not only my transaction management and execution skills but also my risk conscience and understanding the appetite internally for certain risks that are key decision drivers for pbb’, Mata shares. ‘These type of transactions, in a regulatory framework that is becoming increasingly sophisticated, require the involvement of the legal department in a much broader range of issues at transactional level than was the case pre-crisis’.
