Erica Chan is a senior corporate leader who has built a distinguished career at the intersection of law, governance, sustainability, corporate affairs, and strategic transformation. As the Group Chief Legal, Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer and the Company Secretary of DFI Retail Group, she leads the legal, corporate secretarial, compliance, risk management, corporate and government affairs and sustainability functions (with around 230 team members) across 11 markets and has played a central role in shaping the Group’s governance culture, strategic transactions, and enterprise-wide transformation agenda across Asia. DFI Retail Group operates over 7,500 outlets across 11 markets and employs over 79,000 people.
Before joining DFI, Erica spent 12 years at Walmart, where she most recently served as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer, Asia. Earlier in her career, Erica spent 13 years at Star TV Group, part of News Corporation, where she rose to become General Counsel for Greater China and General Manager for Hong Kong.
She was awarded by Chambers and Partners as one of the Top 100 Most Influential In-House Lawyers globally at the Chambers GC Influencers Global in 2019. She was also awarded Asia’s Most Inspirational Woman in Leadership by House of Rose Professional in 2025.
Erica’s leadership spans a complex retail business across Asian markets. She has helped position legal and governance as strategic enablers of transformation, accountability, and responsible business practices across the Group.
She has driven governance and integrity at scale, including establishing a dedicated Ethics & Compliance team and leading DFI’s annual “Do the Right Thing” campaign. Reaching more than 47,000 employees across 11 markets and seven languages, the initiative strengthened ethical expectations, leadership tone, and confidence in speaking up.
Erica has also positioned legal as a driver of enterprise transformation. Her team co-led DFI’s Data Governance Transformation, establishing a Group-wide framework for data classification, protection, retention, access, and sharing, while also shaping AI governance and policies that support the responsible adoption of emerging technologies. She is also part of the DFI AI internal agent steering committee.
Her experience also includes major M&A and divestment matters, such as DFI’s divestment of its Singapore food business (USD 93 million), Yonghui (RMB 4.5 billion), and Robinsons Retail (USD 900 million), as well as Walmart’s USD 16 billion acquisitions of Flipkart and Phoebe in India. These transactions reflect her ability to lead complex cross-border matters while aligning legal execution with business strategy.
She has further championed technology-enabled governance improvements, including DFI’s Licence and Permit Repository Project across markets, and supported annual report and sustainability disclosures to reinforce transparency and investor confidence.
