In an increasingly complex global environment, how are you helping your organisation navigate risk while still supporting growth?

To bring real value as a GC to the business in a challenging environment, it is essential to pro-actively identify pathways or design legal solutions that connect business goals and legal realities to achieve favorable outcomes. Often, a good GC takes ownership of operational needs that may lack clear accountable party or try to build cross-functional initiatives to ensure that an adequate legal review process is in place for the business team to move things forward with clarity and confidence. To accomplish this effectively, it is crucial to develop a deep understanding of the various challenges which may impact the business. By gaining insights into your organisation’s strategies, objectives, and priorities, and cultivating empathy for the difficulties faced by the business, you are better positioned to craft ‘user-friendly’ legal solutions that facilitates progress rather than creating unnecessary friction. The result is a well‑supported front office and control functions, with reduced legal and operational risk—keeping us agile while safeguarding the organisation’s interests in a volatile global market.

How has the role of General Counsel evolved in recent years, and where do you see GCs creating the most value today?

GCs have moved from being solely legal risk managers to becoming strategic business partners. In investment banking, the most value comes from bridging legal expertise with commercial vision — anticipating risks, designing agile solutions, and enabling the business to grow confidently, even amid global complexity. A strong GC doesn’t just protect the bank from downside risk; they actively help build resilience, unlock opportunities, and steer the organisation confidently through an increasingly complex and unpredictable global landscape.

How do you build and maintain a strong legal team?

In an investment bank’s fast-paced environment, I build a strong legal team by focusing on three pillars: collaboration, knowledge sharing, and sustainable work practices. We train lawyers to be versatile across a wide range of transactions, so they can step in for each other and adapt quickly. I lead by example—showing integrity, accountability, curiosity, and clear communication—which fosters trust, supports professional growth, and sustains a positive, resilient team culture.
