Nic. J. Theocarakis’ in-house legal team supports the overall Theocarakis Group operations which include the importation and distribution of Nissan Motor vehicles and a vast array of related aftermarket consumer goods and services. The team is responsible for providing advice to the chief executive officer and the rest of Group managers across a range of the Group companies’ legal interests, risks and obligations. Currently the team consists of three in-house lawyers, two members of the secretariat and its manager. In the words of a nominator, ‘what differentiates it from the majority of legal departments in Greece is the fact that the department is headed not by a senior legal advisor but by a non-attorney business executive backed by and in coordination with a team of highly trained lawyers, fully capable of working autonomously’. This structure generates a team that comprehends the business and corporate philosophy in real-time and is frequently involved in the decision making process and the strategy development. It adds value to the business by balancing legal risk and business interests with commercial acumen. A nominator added that, ‘this relatively small team efficiently manages internally all aspects of the Group’s vertical distribution and network activity, financing, various types of agreements, which in turn minimises the need to outsource tasks to external legal firms and business advisors’.
