Legal manager Eliana Charalambous leads the highly regarded Intership Navigation Company legal team and has been a key factor in its successes over recent years. She explained the team’s role in the company as follows: ‘The legal department acts as the main point of legal support of the organisation locally as well as for respective transactions with group companies abroad and it is responsible for drafting legal documents, advising and ensuring due diligence processes are followed. It also acts as a database for legal documents related to ship management and crew management contracts of our 100 vessels, and for corporate and company certificates and other related legal documents for 150 ship-owning and holding companies as well as for third party vessels. The role of myself as legal manager is to act as an internal legal advisor and coordinator during procedures such as vessel sales, registrations, flag changes and deletions. The legal manager is also appointed as an emergency response team media spokesperson, responsible for issuing press releases and media responses in the event of crises. I am also appointed as the data protection officer, overviewing and monitoring of data protection practices’. Charalambous took over the team at a relatively young age, and had to learn lessons quickly, having a marked effect on how the team is structured in the process. ‘I knew when joining the company that the legal department needed reformation’, she explains. ‘Therefore, the legal department has been structured and organised to function as an internal law firm, taking and managing internally many tasks without involving external law firms’. Intership Navigation Company celebrated its 30th anniversary in November 2018 and now finds itself as among the largest ship owners and managers in Cyprus. With the excellent support provided by its legal team, the company looks set to continue its success for many years to come.
