How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure organisational resilience?
Strategic and business-oriented legal approach: legal matters must be integrated into the broader corporate framework rather than evaluated in isolation and only in legal context. By aligning legal oversight directly with overarching corporate strategy and rationale, risk management shifts from a defensive and conservative hurdle to a proactive commercial catalyst and opportunity producer. General Counsels use structured risk heatmaps to help key decision-makers map trade-offs, identify growth vectors and capture market opportunities. True legal resilience is achieved when the experienced counsel and trusted advisor acts as a solutions-driven business partner – one who turns operational friction and unexpected crises into valuable strategic advantages through seasoned insight, differentiated multi-angle weighing and proper risk management.
What is the biggest shift you have seen in the role of General Counsel in the past five years, and how do you see it evolving further?
I have experienced a big AI-driven shift in legal services: the rapid integration of generative AI and deep data analytics has essentially transformed the modern legal profession by enabling foundational legal research, rendering at least surface-level statutory provisions, judicial precedents, regulatory clauses and standardised contracts templates instantly accessible to internal executives and operational company stakeholders across all business levels. However, raw, unstructured information alone does not mean actionable operational understanding and deep strategic reasoning. The true, irreplaceable valuable assessment of contemporary legal counsel no longer resides in simple information retrieval or routine task execution, but rather in synthesising complex data streams from disparate corporate sources and functions to conduct rigorous root-cause analyses, execute dynamic risk assessments and steer overarching long-term commercial strategy. Consequently, contemporary General Counsels are increasingly required to move beyond traditional, single-dimensional legal problem-solving and risk aversion and adopt a more sophisticated, three-dimensional advisory approach – simultaneously evaluating 360-degree legal, financial, operational, macroeconomic and commercial parameters in any given business scenario, whereas historical legal advisory models often permitted evaluating complex matters through a single statutory or regulatory lens. In this rapidly evolving, technology-driven corporate ecosystem, where automated algorithmic systems produce static legal output at great speeds, specialised human expertise remains fundamentally irreplaceable. Experienced legal counsel provides the critical intellectual bridge required to translate raw, algorithmically generated data into actionable executive foresight, proactive risk management and sustainable, long-term commercial advantage.
How do you balance being a legal risk manager with being a strategic business enabler, and where do you see the biggest tensions?
Modern legal leadership operates at the precise intersection of inherent risk mitigation and aggressive commercial expansion, requiring General Counsels and senior advisers to continuously reconcile the classic tension between strict regulatory compliance and risk aversion patterns with necessary market ambition. In an increasingly complex global economy, future commercial landscapes, administrative conditions and sector-specific regulatory transformations can no longer be accurately forecasted using historical data or traditional predictive modelling alone. Consequently, executive legal teams are regularly forced to formulate strategic recommendations under conditions of severe operational uncertainty. To navigate this ambiguity successfully, legal leaders must synthesise deep institutional knowledge with specialised sectoral experience, enabling them to anticipate unscripted hurdles, identify black swan vulnerabilities and effectively insulate the enterprise against systemic downsides. Rather than acting as organisational bottlenecks, forward-thinking legal departments actively accept calculated risks, design agile compliance frameworks and build robust risk-mitigation guardrails. This proactive advisory approach allows the business to confidently pursue high-reward ventures, seize emerging market opportunities and drive sustainable long-term revenue growth without compromising regulatory integrity, compliance or brand equity.
