Q&A
How is your legal function leveraging technology to enhance efficiency in areas such as contract management and compliance monitoring?
Our legal function drives operational excellence by embedding technology directly into TWED’s contract management and compliance workflows. To lead this digital transformation, I completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Artificial Intelligence for Lawyers from the Uganda Law Society and Universal Technology and Management University, equipping us to build custom AI models. We deploy these tools to streamline cross-border procurement reviews and track compliance triggers in real time.
This technical upskilling bridges AI with legal precision, drastically reducing turnaround times, mitigating risk and institutionalising efficiency across our commercial pipeline.
In light of increasing regulatory scrutiny across sectors in East Africa, how are you adapting your compliance frameworks to stay ahead of change?
To navigate East Africa’s tightening regulatory landscape, we adapt our compliance framework through predictive legal modeling, proactive risk auditing and strategic policy engagement. While regional real estate tax regimes, specifically statutory caps on deductible rental expenses, present commercial constraints that restrict capital reinvestment compared to global hubs like Dubai, we manage this complexity through structured tax planning and dialogue.
Crucially, we leverage statutory investment incentives and tax waivers granted by the Ministry of Finance and Uganda Revenue Authority to support indigenous developers. This balanced approach allows us to safeguard developer capital, maintain strict compliancevand advocate for more competitive, growth-oriented property tax policies.
What trends are you seeing in foreign investment into the region, and how does your role support or facilitate these opportunities?
Uganda is experiencing unprecedented Foreign Direct Investment, catalysed by pre-First Oil infrastructure, industrial park expansion and commercial hospitality demand ahead of AFCON 2027.
My role directly facilitates these inflows by structuring bankable cross-border joint ventures while championing sustainable development. I firmly believe economic expansion must never compromise public health, environmental conservation or human dignity. By embedding rigorous environmental compliance and ESG standards into transaction frameworks, I ensure rapid industrialisation does not occur to the detriment of civil living. As advocates for responsible growth, we bridge global investors with local execution to safeguard capital, protect communities and drive sustainable national prosperity.
