What factors influence your team’s decision to use external legal services versus handling matters in-house, and what criteria are used to evaluate their performance?

Our team applies a structured framework when determining whether to engage external legal advisers. Matters are handled in-house when they fall within our core legal competencies, require deep organisational knowledge, involve day-to-day operational support, or relate to ongoing governance and compliance programmes. External counsel are engaged where specialised subject matter expertise is required, when local jurisdictional insight is essential, or where the matter presents a heightened level of risk, sensitivity, or resource intensity. When evaluating the performance of external counsel, we look at the quality and accuracy of their legal work, their understanding of our business and compliance priorities, responsiveness and clarity of communication, adherence to agreed budgets, and their ability to collaborate effectively with our in-house legal team to deliver a suitable and value-adding output.

How does your team contribute to the overall business strategy of the company? Can you share an example of a recent legal-led initiative that had a significant impact?

The legal function contributes to the development and execution of the company’s overarching business strategy through structured engagement with senior leadership. A central element of this work is our Global Legal Board, which brings together key legal stakeholders and top management to align on strategic priorities, assess emerging risks and ensure that legal considerations are integrated into enterprise-level decision making.

Further hereto, the legal department acts as a strategic partner to the organisation by embedding legal risk management, compliance governance and transactional execution into the company’s decision-making processes. We ensure that strategic initiatives are not only legally sound but structured in a way that supports operational scalability, commercial efficiency and long-term value creation.

What are some of the biggest legal or regulatory challenges currently facing your industry, and how is your team preparing to address them?

One of the most significant dynamics affecting our industry today is the increasing geopolitical instability and the rapid pace of regulatory change across global markets. As a result, we are facing several substantial legal and compliance challenges, and our team is actively preparing to address them. We are navigating continuously evolving international sanctions regimes, ensuring that our global operations, partnerships and supply chains remain compliant through ongoing monitoring and close cross-functional coordination. At the same time, fluctuating tariff structures and shifting trade policies require careful analysis to manage cost implications and support timely strategic decisions, and we work closely with Finance and Supply Chain to anticipate and mitigate potential impacts. Heightened global cyber threats and rising regulatory expectations are likewise driving a strengthened focus on cybersecurity governance, incident response preparedness and compliance across all regions. In parallel, emerging regulatory requirements for technology, data governance and artificial intelligence, particularly in the EU and the US, are becoming increasingly relevant as demand grows for embedding AI into our products. We are therefore developing internal frameworks and guidance to ensure responsible, transparent and compliant use of new technologies. Across these areas, our legal team prioritises proactive regulatory monitoring, early engagement with business stakeholders and the integration of compliance considerations into strategic planning, ensuring the organisation remains resilient and well-prepared in a rapidly evolving regulatory landscape.
