What are the key projects you have been involved in over the past twelve months?

I act as lead legal risk strategist and project advisor, orchestrating the comprehensive legal risk assessment and contractual restructuring for multi-tier operational projects. This included the outsourcing of logistics operations and the specialised management of agricultural, supply chain and distributor networks.

I designed and implemented a robust legal framework for third-party logistics (3PL) outsourcing, ensuring clear liability allocation and Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

I developed specialised compliance protocols for the agricultural sector, focusing on land use, environmental regulations, and fair-trade standards.

In addition, I strengthened the distributor management program by integrating protective clauses against reputational risk and anti-competitive practices.

I also mitigated labour-law exposure by establishing rigorous vetting and monitoring processes for outsourced services.

I achieved a significant reduction in contingent legal liabilities through the standardization of high-risk contracts and ensured 100% compliance with local labour regulations regarding third-party contractors, avoiding potential regulatory sanctions and brand damage.

The organisation also successfully transitioned to an outsourced logistics model with zero litigation during the ramp-up phase.

Can you describe an instance where your legal advice directly influenced business strategy or commercial objectives?

I moved the company away from generic service agreements to specialised restructuring of SLAs. These contracts prioritised liability allocation and clear performance triggers, turning legal compliance into a measurable operational KPI.

I overhauled our agricultural land leases to include customised force majeure clauses and early termination rights without onerous penalties. This was a strategic gamechanger: it allowed the business to exit unviable plots or suspend obligations during unforeseen environmental or regulatory shifts without draining capital, effectively decoupling our growth from long-term, rigid liabilities.

How has the role of general counsel evolved, and what are the most important attributes for the modern in-house lawyer?

The GC’s role has evolved from legal expert to business partner. The GC is expected to be part of the business strategy, spot legal and operational risks, and help the business move faster with confidence. In addition, the legal team has changed into an operational area within the company. The most important attributes for the modern in house lawyer are: business fluency not just legal knowledge; prioritising what matters most; executive communication and influence; protecting ethics, culture and compliance, even under pressure; and an AI governance mindset.

In which areas does compliance most commonly break down, and how do you address these risks?

Data privacy, conflicts of interest and corruption. I periodically identify and prioritise risks based on their likelihood and impact. I move security and ethics from a mandate to a shared responsibility through continuous, role-based training. Finally, I establish clear frameworks that include initial screening, contractual obligations for compliance and regular performance audits.
