Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?

After more than 23 years of professional experience as a lawyer, I have observed that one of the main innovation tools that can be implemented to achieve greater efficiencies in our work is to go back to the basics. In other words, beyond the use of expensive technological software, it is essential to reactivate the sense of community. I encourage my team participate in active groups of legal professionals who share knowledge, ask questions, and discuss legal topics. Participating in these communities can be a valuable resource for us to exchange ideas and seek insights. Young generations of lawyers seem to have forgotten the relevance of sharing ideas with other professionals. It is fundamental to share our concerns with other companies of the same sector that may face similar problems. It is always easier to find common solutions if we work together.

To participate in forums, both as panellists and as attendees, is fundamental, as these spaces are great sources of research and legal inspiration. In our fast-paced world today, where artificial intelligence is taking over many tasks, it is essential to remember that the legal profession is still very human and the greatest innovation we can implement in our teams is to revive the sense of community and support network. Let´s go back to human support.

What are some of the main trends impacting the industry sector you work in in Colombia?

In Colombia we are in a rather unstable political moment, to the extent that major reforms are underway in fundamental areas (tax, pension, labour…) that will impact my industry and companies in Colombia in general. The job of the general counsel will be very important, to quickly prepare the company to these reforms, carry out preventive work, be aware of the new regulations before they come out, and adapt the company so that it can come out successfully of the changes at the lowest possible cost.

What is a cause, business-related or otherwise, you are passionate about, and why?

I am passionate about the issue of diversity and equality for women at work and specifically in the legal profession. Being a mother and having had to pay the consequences of having breaks and delays in my career due to the fact of having a family, has made me a person who is extremely sensitive to this issue. At SGS this topic is fundamental and SGS Colombia is a pioneer in its implementation. In SGS Colombia we have very high percentages of female participation in management positions and in general in the company. However, there is still much to do. We will continue working on the issue of diversity, to ensure that there is real equality of opportunity, and benefits for all. Being a woman and being a mother should never be an obstacle or an impediment in professional development.
