Why are in-house lawyers in a good position to drive change in their organisations?

The role of the in-house lawyer in companies has taken on a very relevant role in recent years, given the regulatory changes and, in particular, the need to add value to the company. Companies are no longer only measured by their profitability or by how much employment they generate, but also how the business is run and the impact on stakeholders. In this sense, the in-house lawyer must be involved, not only in the daily activities of the business, but must also have a global view of the company, being proactive and innovative in the way in which challenges are addressed.

To accomplish this, the in-house lawyer must know the company’s strategic plan, and be effective and efficient in their communications.

On the other hand, in my case, it has been crucial to assume a leadership role in the company’s sustainability strategy, in order to execute actions and implement measures to ensure ethical business performance.

If existent, can you talk about you or your company’s efforts relating to renewability, sustainability or other environmentally friendly activities?

Sustainability driven by both shareholders, customers and suppliers, is a central element for the survival of the company. ESG criteria must form an integral part of the business. It is crucial to recognise and take charge of the impacts of the operation on the different interest groups, and in particularly in communities.

Melón has adopted corporate governance practices that incorporate such criteria, which has been reflected in its integrated report for the year 2022. This report shows how the company has made progress in its commitment to transparency and alignment with the best standards for reporting financial and non-financial information, regulated by different regulations.

Likewise, it has become clear that this task is a process of continuous improvement, in line with the permanent dialogue that is carried out with the different interest groups.
