About

After over a decade in private practice and other in-house legal positions in banks such as ABN AMRO, Rafael Bilbao Deramond joined Scotiabank Chile in 2007 to provide legal advice to middle market and money desk operations. Over time, he took charge of the legal team of corporate banking and the provision of legal advice for the entire business, with the exception of the areas relating to retail banking and mortgage portfolio. In 2011, he joined the Chilean Government for two years, to work as an adviser in the cabinet of the Minister of the Interior of the Government of Chile, in matters that required expertise and detailed attention. About this period in his career, Deramond highlights that, ‘throughout my work at the Cabinet of Ministry of the Interior, during the years 2012 and 2013, I had the opportunity to participate in different projects and subjects of public interest where I gained the experience on how these processes need to be carried out to succeed. As an example of these projects, is when I participated in the Easter Island Immigration Bill, where I was able to contribute with the process of its approval. This experience was very enriching and also allowed me to interact with all kind of stakeholders’. In 2014, he returned to Scotiabank Chile as legal vice-president of the bank, his current role, where he is responsible for legal support and secretary of the board in charge of corporate governance tasks. In 2007, Scotiabank announced the purchase of Banco del Desarrollo. Deramond intervened and participated in all stages of this process, from the purchasing period to the completion of the integration phase, which took two years to complete. He highlights that, ‘this experience gave an overall view of what it means to carried out a large purchasing process. Strategic purchasing process do not always goes to plan, difficulties can arise, which need to be resolved with professional experience, in a timely and coordinated manner in collaboration with the team and units involved. This same experience allowed me to carry out with success, the purchasing process of The Royal Bank of Scotland (an ex – ABN AMRO Bank) 2010, Card Cencosud 2015 and the portfolio of Banco Paris 2017’. In 2018, he took charge of the legal division of the integrated bank and continues to be responsible for the secretary position of the board. He adds, ‘I would like to highlight the support from my current team, with whom, we were able to proceed with a fast and efficient merger process where everyone has undertaken an important role’.
