Generadora Metropolitana is a relatively new player in the energy market and is owned by the AME and EDF Groups. It has an installed capacity in Chile of 750 MW through four generation plants located in strategic points on the National Electric System. Eduardo Diez assumed his current position of the company’s chief legal officer in May 2018 and elaborates on his main duties: ‘As head of the legal department, I have to provide legal support to the CEO and to the board of directors regarding the day-to-day operations of Generadora Metropolitana in Chile. I also have the title of ethics and compliance officer and have to oversee the company’s contractual, litigation and regulation matters. In particular, I had to oversee all the legal matters related with the acquisition by the company of Empresa Eléctrica de Santiago, which was acquired from AES Gener at the beginning of 2018’. Speaking on the contribution he made towards Generadora Metropolitana in his first 12 months, Diez has the following to share: ‘Being an in-house counsel allows me to contribute to the company with legal insight through the management committee, especially during challenging times faced by the company. It also helped me to develop strong resolution abilities and patience when dealing with complex issues. My main concern as chief legal officer is to help the company to build a successful growth path and identify the critical processes within the company’s business in order to minimise the risk associated to those processes. Improving the corporate governance of the company has been another important achievement. The changes imply that our workers are more aware of the company risks and they are more capable to deal with them’. Diez is an accomplished professional in Chile’s in-house market having worked in the energy sector for a total of six years as well as the mining sector for three years holding senior and multijurisdictional roles in throughout this period. Giving back to the country’s legal community, Diez has been lecturing law students at the University of the Andes, Chile, since 2008.
