Diego Brieba, senior counsel at Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile (CODELCO), has impressed since his appointment in 2013 as part of the legal team at the Chilean mining company across Latin America. He has the ability to successfully navigate the often political nature of the state owned company and produce quality legal coverage. He possesses strong business acumen and is constantly expanding his legal expertise in new areas, recently completing an MBA, as well as previously an LLM from Columbia University. Within his work at CODELCO he has led the legal work in respect of the largest corporate issuance in Chilean history, US$2.75bn, in international markets; led the first ever Latin American issuance in the Asian Formosa Bond market; won a major multimillion dollar commercial litigation in respect of one of the company’s main brown fields development projects; successfully negotiated the continuity of an important joint venture; and procured and secured key permits to enable the company to dominate in a northern salt flat in order to develop a lithium project.
