About

Alejandro Rubilar has served as general counsel and head of legal Chile for J.P. Morgan in Santiago since 2008. He has since expanded his role becoming executive director and head of corporate affairs legal for Latin America in 2016, responsible for non-transactional corporate banking legal coverage of J.P. Morgan in Latin America and for leading a cross-border project in the region. He covers 17 jurisdictions and is head of global financial crime law (GFCL) in Latin America, is the regional leader of the office of the legal obligations (OLO), client facing documents program (CFD), and manages legal coverage for human resources in the region. He was appointed in 2018 by the Ministry of Finance of Chile as an honorary member of the Technical Advisory Committee for the enactment of a new Banking Act. He is also J.P. Morgan’s Latin America representative in the Loan Syndications and Trading Association (LSTA) working group, for standardising loan trading documents designed for trading New York law governed loans to Latin American borrowers. Generally, he leads the legal coverage for GCB bankers in the region with a focus on the lending business, and is a regional counsel for the lending and loan trading practice group. Providing coverage to 27 bankers distributed across six countries in the region and some Caribbean jurisdictions, he is the approving authority for documentation waivers and deferrals. A nominator highlights that Rubilar has ‘led, for more than a decade, J.P. Morgan’s Chile legal department and is head of corporate affairs legal for Latin America, following a number of years in a similar position at Citibank. He shows great professional skills, commitment and business acumen within the biggest US banks, leading a strong legal team’. On Chilean matters he is an advisor to the business and corporate groups across all lines of business covering banking, markets and asset management in Chile, including ECM, DCM, M&A and derivatives. He builds and maintains relationships with political and regulatory authorities and is leader of the Chile CIB legal team. Rubilar identifies that he has ‘gone beyond the standard lawyer model by participating in roadshows, visiting clients together with bankers, organising ad-hoc meetings with clients, participating closely with the business to deepen knowledge on markets trends and developments’. He adds that he ‘developed relationships with senior management in different regions to plan strategically and focus on business priorities, to ensure the legal function in Latin America is an effective partner to deliver business results’. Shortly after speaking to us during the research period, Rubilar was appointed as managing director of the company.
