Mercator-S is the largest supermarket retail chain in Serbia, with locations in more than 100 cities across the country. It comprises of IDEA stores, Roda megastores, Mercator, Velpro and HoReCa stores ranging from small corner shops to large retail grocery stores. Mercator-S is part of the larger Croatian headquartered regional retail conglomerate, Agrokor business group, which has been operating in Serbia since 2005 and acquired Mercator Group in 2014. Mercator is one of the top three earning companies in Serbia, employs 3,000 people and is a major player in the grocery retail market. In the last two years, Agrokor has entered into Extraordinary Administration for Companies with Systemic Importance for the Republic of Croatia, a type of managed financial assistance to prevent insolvency for the €5.5bn company, one of the largest in the Balkan region. This has challenged the legal team of all of its subsidiaries, like Mercator-S, to manage the restructuring and financial adjustments to the company from a legal standpoint as part of the Croatian government’s measures to save the company.
