Career Biography
Gabriel Tapia is a senior in-house counsel with over 18 years of experience leading high-impact legal functions across complex, multi-jurisdictional environments. As Regional Head of Legal for the Americas, he has overseen legal operations across more than 28 countries, acting as a strategic business partner to senior leadership while driving risk-informed decision-making and organisational resilience.
Gabriel brings a distinctive international perspective shaped by professional experience in Europe, including Paris, Prague and Munich, combined with deep expertise in Latin American regulatory frameworks. His practice spans corporate governance, M&A, compliance, distribution structuring and high-stakes litigation, with particular strength in navigating protectionist regimes governing commercial agents and foreign principals across the region.
He is widely recognised for aligning legal strategy with business priorities, embedding a disciplined approach to risk through “thoughtful risk-taking” and enabling opportunity-driven outcomes. His track record includes optimising a regional legal budget, implementing a comprehensive compliance risk management framework, leading cross-continental legal impact assessments on distribution models, and successfully mitigating exposure in contentious and hostile commercial disengagements.
Gabriel has also been at the forefront of legal function transformation, leading the implementation of regional contract governance policies, end-to-end contract lifecycle management systems, AI-enabled legal solutions, and robust data privacy frameworks aligned with global standards such as GDPR.
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
In periods of uncertainty, Gabriel adopts a structured and business-centric approach grounded in three core principles: strategic prioritisation, risk transparency and execution agility. He focuses on rapidly identifying material risks, ensuring they are clearly documented and understood, and presenting pragmatic, decision-oriented solutions. In his view, the legal function must serve as an enabler of continuity and resilience, ensuring that the business can move forward with confidence, even in volatile conditions.
General counsel often speak of the need to be strategic to reach the pinnacle of the profession. What does being strategic mean to you?
For Gabriel, being strategic means operating beyond technical legal advice and acting as an integral partner to the business. This involves anticipating risks before they crystallise, understanding commercial drivers at a granular level, and delivering solutions that balance compliance with growth. A truly strategic legal function does not merely protect value – it actively helps create it.
