Torstar Corporation is the parent and management company of some of Canada’s biggest newspaper, print and digital media titles. Such titles include the Toronto Star, Canada’s most popular daily newspaper, as well as 80 other titles across its daily news brands, community brands, and digital ventures divisions. Listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange since the 1970’s, the company has a long history in the media industry with its roots going back to daily newspapers founded in the 1880’s. The Torstar in-house legal team is expertly led by senior vice president, general counsel and secretary Marie Beyette, who is highly skilled in media law from IP and privacy law to corporate management and everything in between, including matters pertaining to the firm’s distribution services, directories, speciality publications and consumer shows. The company has invested heavily in expanding its content range and productions which has involved the close guidance of the team on its legal matters. In June 2018, Torstar announced an exclusive deal with The Wall Street Journal, publishing a limited sample of its articles as well as drawing upon the Journal’s research to develop the Star Business Journal, a new financial news and analysis publication. Additionally, Torstar has acquired, through a subsidiary, iPolitics, an Ottawa-based political news company, adding to its portfolio.
