Canada Pacific Railway
The in-house legal department at Canada Pacific Railway (CP), one of the largest railway companies in North America, is expertly led by chief legal officer and corporate secretary Jeffrey J. Ellis and comprises some of the best in-house lawyers in Canada’s transportation sector. The team is responsible for the legal, corporate secretarial, government relations and public affairs matters concerning CP in Canada and the US. The company operates across both sides of the border servicing a full range of sectors. The company is dual regulated by Canadian and US regulators including The Canadian Transport Agency, Transport Canada, the Federal Railroad Administration and the Surface Transportation Board in the US over prices, maintenance, consumer regulations and more. This high level of scrutiny and multi-jurisdictional regulation requires and demonstrates a high level of skill from the in-house legal team. The team was recently credited for its handling of the renegotiation of representation agreements with its workers’ unions including Unifor, as announced in December 2018, and TCRC in July 2018.
