The Bentall Kennedy in-house legal and compliance group is comprised of two compliance professionals, one law clerk and an executive assistant and is responsible for all legal and regulatory compliance matters across the firm’s group of companies, including operations in Canada, the US and Europe. Matthew Campbell, senior vice president, Canadian general counsel and group chief compliance officer, leads the department, reporting to the company’s chief corporate and financial officer. In the last year the team has taken on even more work due to the departure of the company’s US general counsel in September 2018. Highly motivated and skilful in its operations, the team orchestrated the sale of Bentall Kennedy to Sun Life Financial in 2015, the disposition of a portion of Bentall Kennedy’s Canadian business to British Columbia Investment Management Corporation between 2016 and 2018, and the development and marketing of Bentall Kennedy High Yield Canadian Property Fund. It has also overseen all legal matters affecting the Bentall Kennedy business, including a range of strategic initiatives, among other projects. Campbell articulates the team’s vision: ‘On the legal side, we aim to prudently enable business initiatives. On the compliance side, we have a culture of entrepreneurial compliance. Our bias is toward action and change, and we aim to be cost-effective and efficient. We jump in to projects to get things done’.
