About

With a mind for growth and innovation, the Aurora Cannabis legal team has energetically been recruiting new team members to enhance legal services to the company. Senior legal counsel Travis Anderson joined the Edmonton legal team in May 2018 and specialises in regulatory matters and general risk management and also has a broad base of corporate commercial experience. Also joining the Edmonton team in June of 2018 is legal counsel Melissa Mitchell, an M&A lawyer with a broad base of corporate commercial experience who had previously worked as an associate in Vancouver. Legal counsel Katharine Brickman joined the Aurora legal team in November 2018 and is leading the team through regulatory matters. Aurora Cannabis’s in-house legal team is led by senior vice president and general counsel of Aurora Cannabis, Jillian Swainson. Over the past 2.5 years, Aurora has been very aggressive with its M&A activity, both domestically and internationally, including the acquisition of 18 companies plus 15 strategic investments. The company with guidance from its legal team, has embarked on an aggressive international expansion strategy that currently sees Aurora with operations and or sales and participations across five continents in 23 countries including Germany, Denmark, Italy, Australia and most recently Uruguay through the acquisition of ICC Labs. The legal team was also an integral part of the Aurora Cannabis-MedReleaf acquisition, the largest transaction in the history of the cannabis sector, valued at approximately C$3.2bn. Most recently, Aurora has entered into a letter of intent to acquire Farmacias Magistrales, an established Mexican pharmaceutical manufacturer and distributor. The company has received the first and only import license for raw THC products granted to date. These acquisitions are a compelling combination bringing together the best of the cannabis industry and creating a powerful platform generating a preeminent cannabis company. According to Swainson, ‘Aurora’s management team recognises the value of first mover advantage in new markets and often pursues these opportunities, and this creates a unique challenge for the Aurora legal team, as [it] navigates through constantly changing regulatory environments internationally in an industry that is evolving on a day-to-day basis’.
