The in-house legal team at Air Canada, the national airline of Canada, is led by the international award-winning lawyer and chief legal officer David Shapiro, and combines the talents of many commercially-minded and highly skilled lawyers. The team controls the legal elements of Canada’s largest airline and commercial fleet of aircraft in the Canada-US cross border market carrying over 48 million passengers in 2018. Air Canada is also a member of the Star Alliance, and therefore connected to the world’s largest commercial aviation network. Publicly traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange, the OTCQX International Premier in the US, and privatised in 1989, the airline is one of the top 20 largest airlines in the world. The legal team in recent years has guaranteed the expansion of the company through a major growth period including the expansion of its fleet, adding 61 new Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in 2018 with 37 more scheduled for delivery by the end of 2019. The team continues to excel as demonstrated by the January 2019 announcement of the completion of Air Canada’s acquisition of Aimia Canada, operator of Aeroplan loyalty. This will add to its network a major new loyalty program, to be launched in 2020.
