Career Biography

Stephen received his business degree from the University of Alberta where he was also the 2002 U of A Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year, 2002 Golden Bears Basketball team MVP (Wardlaw Porteous Trophy), 2002 CIS Men’s Basketball National Champion, and 2002 CIS Men’s Basketball Finals MVP (Jack Donohue Trophy). He was on the shortlist for the Canadian National Men’s Basketball Team and had opportunities to play professionally oversees in 2002, but he decided to focus his efforts on obtaining his law degree from the U of A Faculty of Law.

Following law school, Stephen became an articling student and associate at Miller Thomson LLP in Edmonton. He then joined Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP (subsequently Dentons LLP) where he continued his career as a trademark agent and intellectual property specialist. He then focussed his efforts on insurance defence work at CBM Lawyers in Edmonton before joining SGI’s in-house legal team in 2015 to lead the Alberta and BC regions. He currently heads up the Edmonton and Calgary legal offices of SGI Canada.

Stephen was able to revive his basketball career by becoming a member of the Edmonton Chill Professional Basketball Team 2008 – while also balancing a legal career. This led to a feature article in the September 2008 Issue of Canadian Lawyer Magazine.

Stephen has appeared before the Alberta Court of Justice, the Alberta Court of King’s Bench, the Alberta Court of Appeal as well as the Copyright Board of Canada. He also took advantage of the opportunity to volunteer his legal expertise as an Edmonton Northlands Board Member and Shareholder from 2013 to 2021.

In 2025, Stephen was a recipient of the Saskatchewan Government Insurance Culture Award for his outstanding leadership and contributions toward creating and maintaining a positive corporate culture and work environment. He was also a mainstage speaker at SGI’s 2025 Broker Convention in Saskatoon on the topic of material misrepresentation & material change in risk.

Stephen has also given back to the U of A Faculty of Law by serving as an “ELITE Pathway Program for Law” Panelist in August 2023 and also by sharing insights in a feature article with the U of A Faculty of Law in support of Black History Month 2024. He is also a mentor with the Black Future Lawyers Student Chapter at the U of A and a former keynote speaker at the National Black Coalition of Canada Awards for Excellence in Edmonton.

Stephen is currently preparing to equip SGI for the reform of Alberta’s auto insurance regime in January 2027 which will introduce a no-fault scheme for the first time. This will be a fundamental shift away from the tort system currently in place in Alberta and Stephen and his team will be providing leadership and support to their internal clients in order to facilitate a smooth transition.
