Stefan John Gruszka
Assistant general counsel | Kiewit Canada
What are the most significant matters, transactions, or legal initiatives you and your team have been involved in over the past 12–18 months?
Over the last 12 months we are most proud of our ongoing work at the Union Station Expansion Project in downtown Toronto, the advancement of the Woodfibre LNG Project (Module Assembly and related works), our path to completion on no less than 5 projects for the Elk Valley Resources Water Treatment Projects in British Columbia, our completion of the Cheekeye Debris Barrier Project in Squamish BC and the successful completion of the YVR North Runway Projects, among many other across Canada. We are also very proud of the work we are now starting on the Quebec City Tramway Project.
Have there been any moments in your career as an in-house lawyer that you consider particularly defining, unusual, or formative in shaping how you approach your role today?
As a long term inhouse counsel with Kiewit responsible for our ongoing Project execution and operational affairs, I have had multiple unique experiences that are both within and outside the traditional concepts of “construction law” that involved areas of commercial law, intellectual property, First Nations/Aboriginal Engagement, Renewable Energy, regulatory law, criminal law and many other areas of the law that arise in the course of executing marquee, nation building projects. Most recently, as the executive sponsor of all legal training initiatives for the company, I have been fortunate to work with our HR Business partners and executive management teams on developing, implementing and fostering an internal training program for all lawyers within Kiewit (across North America) to ensure best in class service based on a thorough and detailed understanding of our core business and operational functions- not just building good lawyers, but building lawyers knowledgeable in the Work that we do and the projects we build this includes the use and assessment of how AI fits into the new legal world.
How does your legal team contribute to broader business strategy within your organisation, and can you share an example where legal input materially influenced a key decision or outcome?
As members of our operational management and execution teams, we are fully integrated into the day-to-day business planning, strategic outlooks and forecasting of future project opportunities and current project challenges to look around corners and anticipate the needs of our business and our leaders. We are involved from the very outset of project development opportunities to the final close out and completion of all our projects.
