Career Biography
Paul Alpern is executive vice president and general counsel at Stantec. In this role, he leads a multidisciplinary team of lawyers, paralegals, and risk professionals responsible for Stantec’s worldwide legal affairs, including contracts, litigation, employment and labour law, corporate governance, privacy, insurance, integrity and ethics, enterprise risk management, and acquisitions. He joined Stantec’s executive leadership team in January 2025 and is focused on protecting the company’s reputation, strengthening its preparedness for risk, supporting the safety of its people, and enabling sustainable growth and productivity.
Paul joined Stantec in 1998 as only the second lawyer ever hired by the company. During his nearly three decades with the organisation, he has helped guide Stantec’s transformation from a primarily North American operation into a global professional services leader serving clients and communities around the world. He is passionate about collaborating with clients and colleagues to create innovative solutions that help communities address some of the world’s most pressing Fchallenges, including aging infrastructure, population growth, urbanisation, and the energy transition.
Before joining Stantec, Paul spent seven years in private practice focusing on employment and labour law. He has also served as an adjunct professor at the University of Lethbridge, teaching labour and employment law. Widely respected for his practical judgment, strategic perspective, and commitment to ethical leadership, Paul brings a unique combination of legal expertise, business acumen, and risk management experience to Stantec’s leadership team. Outside the office, like many Edmontonians, he remains a loyal and long-suffering supporter of the Edmonton Oilers.
