Career Biography

Monic Pratch is vice president, general counsel, corporate secretary and sustainability at FortisBC, British Columbia’s largest energy provider, serving more than 1.3 million customers across the province. As a member of the company’s executive leadership team, she oversees a diverse portfolio spanning legal, governance, privacy, sustainability, renewable natural gas, lower-carbon fuels, lower-carbon transportation, decarbonisation, environment and lands. She also serves as corporate secretary for the FortisBC group of companies.

Since joining FortisBC’s legal department in 2010, Monic has played an integral role in supporting the organisation through a period of significant growth and transformation in the energy sector. Over the course of her career with FortisBC, she has held progressively senior positions including senior counsel, privacy officer, corporate secretary and director of governance and corporate compliance, providing strategic counsel on corporate, regulatory, governance, privacy, finance and transactional matters.

In her current role, Monic works closely with executive leadership and business teams to navigate complex legal and regulatory requirements while advancing FortisBC’s strategic priorities. As the executive responsible for sustainability, she helps support the company’s efforts to provide the energy customers need while advancing lower-carbon energy solutions and supporting provincial climate action goals. Her portfolio spans traditional utility operations as well as renewable natural gas, lower-carbon fuels, lower-carbon transportation, decarbonisation and sustainability initiatives that help position FortisBC to meet evolving customer needs and regulatory expectations.

Prior to joining FortisBC, Monic articled and practised with a large Edmonton law firm, where she focused on corporate, real property, privacy and administrative law. Her experience in private practice, combined with more than 15 years of in-house leadership at FortisBC, provides her with a broad perspective on the legal, regulatory and business considerations facing utilities today.

Beyond her role at FortisBC, Monic is an active contributor to the legal community. She co-founded the Okanagan In-House Counsel Group, establishing a forum where local in-house counsel can build connections, share knowledge and explore common professional challenges. Through her teaching at UBC Okanagan, she also helps foster an interest in the law among commerce students.

Monic holds a law degree and a master of business administration from the University of Alberta, as well as a bachelor of arts in political science and international development studies from Dalhousie University. She is called to the bar in both British Columbia and Alberta.
