Career Biography 

As general counsel and corporate secretary, Don leads Manitoba Hydro’s legal services department, property department, insurance services, ethics and compliance department, market compliance office and privacy office.

Manitoba Hydro is a provincial Crown corporation and Manitoba’s only electricity and natural gas provider, a vertically integrated monopoly that generates, transmits and distributes energy to Manitobans and exports power to other provinces and US states.

As general counsel, he advises Manitoba Hydro’s executive leadership team on matters of law and governance and assists with the development of strategies and corporate goals and objectives, and then assists with their implementation. In his role as corporate secretary, Don ensures the integrity of Manitoba Hydro’s governance framework and supports the Manitoba Hydro Electric Board in its oversight responsibilities.

Prior to joining Manitoba Hydro, Don was a partner in a Winnipeg law firm where he practised for 16 years. After joining the Manitoba Hydro legal services department, he practised primarily in the area of energy law until his appointment as general counsel and corporate secretary in 2021.

Don holds a bachelor of science and a bachelor of laws, both from the University of Manitoba.
