Jon Domanko
Vice president of legal, Canada | Restaurant Brands International Inc
Legal team size: 14
What projects are you most proud of over the past 12 months?
Over the past year, I’ve supported several high-impact initiatives across RBI’s Canadian brands. At Tim Hortons, our legal team worked closely with the business to advance the “Back to Basics” strategy, focused on improving product quality, marketing consistency, and digital engagement. I also supported Popeyes’ continued Canadian growth through franchise development and helped establish the legal architecture for Firehouse Subs as it builds its presence in Canada.
The highest profile matters include a range of litigation matters, everything from class actions to commercial disputes, with a focus on protecting brand equity and resolving issues efficiently. Our approach is to defend the company’s position firmly, but also to identify opportunities for clarity and alignment that benefit the broader system. Where possible, we aim for resolution that not only mitigates risk but reinforces trust with stakeholders.
Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?
I joined Tim Hortons shortly before the merger that formed RBI, and the integration that followed was as much about cultural alignment as legal structure. I played a direct role in helping Tim Hortons transition from a standalone Canadian institution into part of a fast-moving, global brand platform. That experience shaped my approach to legal leadership, reinforcing the importance of balancing business agility with long-term brand and stakeholder alignment.
I also led RBI’s legal strategy in several franchise-related class actions involving advertising fund use and franchisee association rights. In each case, I worked to clarify our legal position while ensuring that our approach reflected fairness, system consistency, and a broader effort to strengthen communication and cohesion across the franchise network.
How does your legal team contribute to the overall business strategy of the company?
We play a hands-on role in shaping strategy across franchising, marketing, operations, and digital. Our goal is to prevent problems early, offer clear guidance, and enable the business to move quickly without losing sight of long-term brand integrity. Our legal team vision keeps us grounded: we aim to be trusted advisors who solve problems big and small, share knowledge freely, and do what’s right. We’re a diverse, responsive group that prides itself on being pragmatic, principled, and accessible.
