Joanna Portella joined Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras (Azul) in September 2011 after a 10 year career in private practice at Clifford Chance and TozziniFreire Advogados. A specialist in corporate law and commercial matters with an LLM and other post-graduate study, Fischer is well suited to management of the legal affairs at Azul, Brazil’s largest airlines in terms of cities covered, with over 100 destinations. The airline also has extensive internal coverage, and serves regular flights to Florida and Portugal, carrying about 22 million passengers in 2017. Azul announced in July 2018 that it is purchasing 21 Embraer 195-E2 aircraft to add to its fleet at the industry award-winning low-cost carrier. Portella supervises the legal arrangements for such a purchase and others, as well as managing the regulatory compliance involved in the aviation industry, and commitments to the New York Stock Exchange, where it is publicly listed. Portella assisted in the legal arrangements for a sale of Azul shares by Chinese airline Hainan airlines, a major deal executed in July 2018. Also, in 2018, Azul was recognised by Trip Advisor as the best airline in Latin America, a major achievement for the firm and its operations.
