Alfredo Santana started his career at Umicore (previously Degussa) where he worked for nine years. In 2003 he joined Honda Motors as a legal supervisor and was later promoted to manager of legal and corporate affairs in Manaus. In 2010, he moved to Sony Electronics and then in 2014, joined Volvo initially as manager of legal in Latin America but shortly after was promoted to legal and compliance director in Latin America. At Volvo, Santana created a new way of working and developed a strong team. Under his direction the team achieved the best rating in all of the Volvo Group and has improved results in labour litigation and other labour related matters. Santana worked on the M&A project to sell the company in Venezuela and conducted a litigation with a distributor in the region. During his four year tenure he has completely reorganised the corporate set up of the company in Latin America. Describing his philosophy and method of success, Santana says that it is important as an in-house lawyer to be ‘proactive and provide support to the company early; to add value to the business in the organisation, contributing to achieve the goals and challenges’.
