Can you tell us a little about your most significant accomplishments and projects, as a team or by yourself in your role, recently?

I am proud that my team achieves many things with few resources.

During the time that we have been working, we have innovated in different aspects that later were replicated by the general practice of other lawyer’s companies. For example, VIVA has been a pioneer using the digital signature, as in our country very few companies were using it before the Covid-19 outbreak. We were also the first entity in the sector to attend, through digital platforms, the orders of judicial authorities, always safeguarding the legality of the personal data of our users.

One of the most important tasks I carried out in recent years, as the leader of the legal team, was the fast adaptation of the team to the digital media. The team also implemented electronic methods for the subscription of agreements and communications, and therefore the reduction of the use of paper.

Even when we were working remotely, the team was able to accompany the company’s commercial, logistics and technical operations initiatives. During that period, legal advice has been maintained in new and unknown environments. For example, the way of making contracts with suppliers was innovated, changing the traditional form of printed contracts to digital contracts validated with digital signatures.

Recently, the management of permits and authorisations has been entrusted to the legal department. This has forced the team to acquire new skills in direct contract negotiations as well as obtaining permit authorisations from different authorities.

What is a cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about and why?

The telecommunications sector, in addition of being regulated by the State as being a public service, is a dynamic sector that requires constant updating, not only focusing on regulations, but also on new trends and technologies that transform this industry. One of the biggest concerns I have, is the situation of legal instability that Bolivia is going through, which generates a lack of institutional structure in the judicial body. This may result in abuse of the Public Administration.

How is your legal team planning to contribute to the growth and expansion of your organisation, over the next few months?

The team will try to maintain its motivation and unity to take advantage of the specific strengths of the members, as well as the new strengths acquired by the team. This helps us provide the necessary legal advice to maintain the long-term viability and strength of new initiatives that the company will undertake. This requires that team members must maintain constant training in the laws and trends of the telecommunications sector, and even with other sectors that today seem to be very distant (such as the financial sector, and even agriculture), but that might become more relevant with technological advances.
