What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?

The legal function changed its structure last year, which added additional pressure to our existing workload. While our new team set-up was being established, we had to ensure it remained business as usual across our matters.

Do you have an example of a time when you have come up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works that did not result in a large expense?

We have many technologies available to us when it comes to improving the way we work. The biggest challenge is choosing the right one to start with, as you can only implement them one at a time. With our new team set-up, we will soon start using a tool to track and collect market claims from different countries. With the tool doing collection work for us, we can analyse its findings and share our reports with the markets to help them better prepare for and predict changes that may be coming down the pipeline.

What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?

You really need to be a part of the business team. You have to understand their targets, know their challenges and be practical, responsive, and proactive while ensuring the legal basics are complied with.
