Can you please give us an idea of the sort of work your team has done recently?

My team and I are usually involved with tenders concerning the provision of several logistics services, the coordination and handling of claims arising out of the sea; air, ground, and rail transport of goods; and contract drafting, insurance negotiations and compliance matters.

Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?

The buzzwords – or rather ‘the future is now’ – are blockchain, automation, AI, and virtual reality. These have transformed – and will continue transforming – our day-to-day professional lives.

The main challenge with technology is choosing the right one to benefit the business. The goal of digital is to complement the role of lawyers and not to replace them —which is what scares many counsel. Technology improves work quality, minimises the effort spent on routine and recurring tasks, and eliminates human error — it makes lawyers freer to deal with more complex matters.

What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?

In addition to typical in-house lawyer’s tasks – dealing with a wide range of legal matters; working in a logistics company requires understanding and confidently navigating tough waters of international transport law, handling claims involving different means of transport and taking care of insurance arrangements.
