A compact but dynamic, knowledgeable and business-savvy legal function, multinational consumer products giant L’Oréal’s legal team in Argentina is comprised of three individuals; Solange Kurchan as legal manager, Matías Sorondo as senior lawyer and Catalina Blois as paralegal. According to Kurchan, the mantra of the team is to ‘make things happen in a safe way’, and this is evinced by its commitment to becoming ‘business partners of all the areas of the company by giving support and trying not to be the stick in the wheel’.

Speaking to how this is achieved, Kurchan explains the team’s dedication to improving internal company working methods: ‘We implemented new processes, such as an advertising approval process that helps to speed up the approval of the advertisements of the company and to avoid misleading advertisements. This process reduced the number of claims by consumers’. Additionally, the team recently ‘drafted standard documents of the most used agreements and implemented a form of approval of agreements with customers in order to have all the commercial terms with customers duly approved by the directors of the company’.

Going above and beyond, the team is responsible for giving educational talks regarding ‘the importance of the agreements in Argentina’ to relevant parties. Keen to stress the team’s emphasis on leadership and accountability, Kurchan states that ‘if something goes wrong the team, as a whole, is responsible’.
