Now owned by members of the Bemberg family (former owners of the Quilmes beer brand), Grupo Peñaflor is Argentina’s largest wine producer and one of the top 10 wine companies in the world. As such, the range of legal issues it faces is extremely broad. From planting and harvesting vineyards to industrially producing, marketing and distributing its wines, the company interacts with a wide range of stakeholders and regulators, each of which introduces its own challenges. Sebastián Baglietto is Grupo Peñaflor’s legal affairs manager and is recognised as one of Argentina’s leading consumer sector counsel. He is involved in everything from product regulation to international distribution agreements, and from brand and marketing issues to liaising with state and industry bodies. In 2015, Grupo Peñaflor struck a deal to buy Diageo’s wine interests in Argentina, meaning the complexities of negotiating cross-border M&A and licensing agreements with one of the world’s largest consumer goods companies were added to Baglietto’s portfolio. He is not only an experienced lawyer but an engaging speaker and prominent commentator on in-house issues. He began his career as part of the legal team at industrials conglomerate Techint Group before moving to Argentine firm Landin & Asociados as a corporate lawyer.
