Currently operating as general counsel at Argentina-based power company Genneia, formerly known as Emgasud, the talented Diego Abelleyra is in charge of the organisation’s legal affairs. Abelleyra describes his function as providing ‘proactive legal advice every time a strategic decision of the company needs to be adopted’. Together with his legal department of three members, Abelleyra is credited for the provision of swift, insightful legal expertise regarding the structuring of Genneia’s power projects at all stages. The team’s advice covers the full cycle of projects, including an active role in development, financing, construction and operation. Similar to various other large companies in Argentina, Genneia have endured difficulties thanks to the changing regulatory environment in the country. A constant flux in laws and requirements have resulted in Abelleyra and his legal division being required to adapt their practices and operate in an innovative fashion in order to protect the organisation and its clients. The heavily regulated energy industry however has presented what Abelleyra describes as a ‘positive scenario for the development of big infrastructure projects in Argentina, including power projects’. He explains that this will result in ‘new but encouraging and positive challenges in the exercise of the legal profession, and to our role as in house counsels’. Abelleyra’s previous endeavours include an 11 year tenure at Marval, O’Farrell & Mairal where he worked as a senior associate.
