October 2018 saw a major success for the Thales Africa legal team, as it successfully negotiated approval with South Africa’s Competition Commission for the long-anticipated €4.65bn acquisition by the company of digital security company Gemalto. This antitrust approval, the seventh of 15 needed by the company worldwide to complete the deal, is a major step towards the completion of this strategically important acquisition by the company, and has earned the South Africa-based Thales legal team plaudits from the wider group as well as African in-house legal press and other interested observers. Head of legal and contracts management and company secretary Hazel Mngomezulu was highlighted by nominators as a key performer within the team who has had a major impact in all of the team’s success in recent months.
