South African Breweries’ legal team was instrumental in what was undoubtedly the most important strategic development for the company in recent years which saw it combine businesses with global competitor AB InBev of which it is now a direct subsidiary after a US$107bn deal was struck. This monumental agreement, which was completed in October 2016, required a considerable input from the South African Breweries legal function to get over the line and is an example of the team having a major impact on the strategic direction of the organisation. Director of legal Warren Van Rooyen – who has practiced at South African Breweries for eight years prior to which he was an in-house counsel for Absa – is a key team member who has been central to most of the team’s achievements in recent months.
