Gold Fields is a globally diversified gold producer with seven operating mines in Australia, Ghana, Peru and South Africa, with a total annual gold-equivalent production of approximately 2.2 million ounces. As one of the largest gold producers in the world, it employs over 50,000 employees at its various operations. An integral part of its workforce is the legal team, described as ‘excellent’ by nominators, has been proactively involved in the company’s most important corporate deals. One of these, the listing of Sibanye Gold, formerly a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gold Fields, required the team to work on the listing documentation for both the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange, and to assist with financial documents for both Gold Fields and Sibanye Gold. Executive vice president and group general counsel Taryn Harmse leads the team on numerous deals, most notably the buyout of the Ghana minorities from IAMGOLD Corp in June 2011 for US$670m. Other achievements for the legal department include involvement in the joint venture negotiations relating to the closing of the Chucapaca agreement with Buenaventura in Peru, and completing a US$1bn bond for Gold Fields in September 2010.
