Formed in 2004 via a merger between AngloGold and Ashanti Goldfields, AngloGold Ashanti is one of the ten largest gold producers in the world. Operating in a highly scrutinised and volatile industry, the legal function’s risk management work has been recognised as a major contribution to the company. The team has also played a big part in effectively managing dispute resolution matters, with recent highlights including a 2015 appeal to the High Court to remove extra tariffs imposed for water supplies to one of their mines by the Merafong City Local Municipality, in which the court ruled in AngloGold Ashanti’s favour by determining that the charges were unfair.
