Abbott expanded its operation in Latin America in 2014 with significant acquisitions of Chile’s CFR Pharmaceuticals and two Colombian companies, Synthesis and Lafrancol, with the latter owning brands such as Eroxim, Sevedol, Soy Plus, Sonax and Finigax. Since then Abbott’s legal department in Colombia has expanded dramatically, with highly experienced lawyer Monica Cuesta moving there to direct legal affairs across Latin America and Canada. Apart from growing in size, over the years the team has undergone significant changes in structure, taking steps to add value while improving the quality of work it does with the business. ‘What we have been doing for a while now has been getting involved directly in the business committees on a regional and country level, which has enabled us to understand the strategy of the business. Our recent focus has mainly been to be part of the organisation and the teams to achieve goals, doing the correct thing from the legal perspective’, says Cuesta. Over the past three years, the team has also made an immense contribution to the company on a regional level by seamlessly supporting the integration of the newly acquired entities into the company.
