About

Mariangela Daniele Maruishi Bartz is an expert in-house lawyer with eighteen years of experience in the legal field at leading Brazilian companies Vale and Fibria Celulose, and law firms in both Brazil and in China. Additionally, she has three years of experience at international and local banks. Bartz has strong experience in managing legal departments in Brazil and abroad, and in setting challenging and productive goals for teams, managing resources and support by implementing data to track progress and measure results. During her time at Fibra Celulose, which she joined in October 2017, Bartz has changed the legal department in important ways such as its approach to external law firms, reducing the number of cases, law firms and fees by establishing discounts, and a yearly survey of law firms to access their security approach, strategic alignment, clear risk analysis, creative solutions, and regulation adherence. She has also instituted that the contracts and dispute teams exchange experience on a regular basis. Usually team members of related areas do not meet and exchange experiences that are crucial to actually implement a “lessons learned” culture. On this culture, Bartz highlights that it is not to just recognise, ‘specific expertise, but to make sure the lawyer will be able to have a systemic view and strategic approach to legal issues or projects. If too specialised, the lawyer may not be able to provide a feasible solution and it may cause even more exposure in another area. In addition, especially if you have to decrease the size of your team, you may need to have lawyers that can replace each other without actually affecting the delivery capability of the legal department’. Bartz is directly involved in all legal matters related to a corporate reorganisation for the combination of operations and shareholders bases of Suzano and Fibria. Some of the most important transactions include: a November 2017 issuance of international bonds for US$600m maturing in 2025, the merger of Fibria MS into Fibria in December 2017, and in January 2018 the conclusion of the negotiation of a long-term agreement with DP World Santos for warehousing and port logistics services at the latter’s private use terminal located on the left bank of the estuary of Santos on the coast of São Paulo state, which provides investments amounting R$700m for the construction of the port facilities and guarantee of services to Fibria through 2029.
