About

Recognised for her ability to deliver some of the largest projects ever undertaken in the Australian energy industry, INPEX’s general counsel and general manager of legal in Australia Jodie Hatherly – previously highlighted in 2016’s GC Powerlist: Australia and New Zealand – continues to be one of the stand out performers in the in-house community. She has amassed a strong career portfolio working on behalf of the Japanese-owned oil company, where she has worked on high-profile projects including the $34bn AUD Ichthys megaproject – ranked one of the world’s most significant oil and gas developments – in which Hatherly led a $20bn AUD financing that was the largest project-financing deal ever made.

Consistently high-performing, Hatherly displays not only legal expertise but leadership and management skills, taking charge of a legal team that has expanded greatly since her arrival at the company in 2010. Even in the face of large scale issues such as a recent legal challenge brought to INPEX by another large-scale business that went to court, INPEX’s stakeholders can rely on Hatherly’s legal nous and commercial insight to successfully mitigate risk and bring material benefits to the organisation. Her advice proved to be extremely valuable in this instance, as the result of a judge’s decision in the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory – which ruled in favour of INPEX – the company will not be liable to pay more than $100m AUD in damages that was sought by their opponents, a demonstrable financial and reputational success that Hatherly was able to contribute to.
