Dompé is an Italian biopharmaceutical company focused on the innovation, research and development of healthcare. Established in 1940, Dompé is headquartered in Milan, but has branches in Boston, Barcelona, Berlin, Paris, Slough and Tirana. The company accounts for approximately 800 employees and has a turnover of €252m. As a pharmaceutical company, commercialising medicine is a core element of the legal teams function as all products require a license certified by EMEA regulations. Made up of 11 stalwart professionals, comprising of five lawyers and one paralegal the legal department coordinates the corporate staff especially the staff abroad when they prepare the confidentiality agreements. Within the team there is a patent attorney who manages the patent portfolio and coordinates factions in more than 50 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa. Additionally a compliance team of four assists the company, made up of members with backgrounds in economics or in a scientific based subject, further fortifying the legal knowledge of the team. The combined knowledge of the team has been utilised when launching a biotech product which is a medicinal drug for a rare pathological disease for the cornea area. The product will receive a fast-track approach and is expected to launch very soon. The forward thinking team has invested significantly in digitisation in order to standardise processes throughout the company and making contracts available in the way that the business can negotiate its most critical agreements, creating a platform to create and displays contracts. Explaining one of its recently created functions, Carmen Di Marino, chief legal officer said: ‘We created an online questionnaire, a platform designed to connect a provisional agreement to each answer to generate a specific input for the business. It’s ultimately an assessment asking what the most important aspects to regulate are and the critical things we want to prevent’. Manufacturing this questionnaire proved to be a very impressive and effective innovation by not only reducing legal work by 30% but also implementing safeguarding measures and avoiding corruption.
