India-based distribution and information technology company HCL Infosystems operates through hardware products and solutions, distribution and learning services. The tech savvy legal team is composed of 16 lawyers and three non-lawyers and is divided into a number of specialised departments made up of the contract and corporate commercial department, litigation, corporate advisory, M&A and human resources and employee related issues. The legal team manage all legal issues of the five businesses and subsidiaries of the company and are led by distinguished group general counsel, Rajiv Choubey who boasts 20 years’ experience in a number of corporate law areas. Known for his ‘high spirited’ and ‘optimistic’ approach as a leader, nominators have noticed that, ‘he has brought out the best skills in his team members’. Choubey believes that the legal team is a key business partner in achieving business objectives whilst handling governance, risk and compliance. He explains: ‘The team strives for providing cost-effective solutions to the business, minimise risk and recover outstanding dues in the shortest span of time. We believe in developing a best in-class in-house capability’. The rest of the team has also received much praise from peers for being a highly consistent and dedicated group of lawyers with strong litigation abilities and a great understanding of the business: ‘We launched a knowledge sharing series called “Episteme” for the legal team and also launched “Legal for Non-Legal”, an initiative in the form of workshops to train business people in legal matters’. This is aimed at imparting knowledge to members of the business and through these workshops they are equipped to understand legal risks that may arise. Known for establishing a number of innovative system processes to improve efficiency, the team is working towards implementing a web based tool for contract management as well as a litigation management system that generates management information system (MIS) related to legal matters.
