How is your legal function leveraging technology to enhance efficiency in areas such as contract management and compliance monitoring?

We have adopted a robust contract management system and integrated Artificial intelligence in our daily legal work. We also have an efficient compliance management tool that ensure we are compliant with relevant laws applicable to the telecommunication and mobile money sectors.

What trends are you seeing in foreign investment into the region, and how does your role support or facilitate these opportunities?

Foreign investment is keen on the telecommunication sector and specifically the digital economy which Airtel is at the center of. The legal team supports in undertaking financing transactions that bring the much-needed capital to Kenya to support our growth as Airtel Kenya. 

How is the role of the General Counsel evolving in East Africa as organisations place greater emphasis on governance, transparency and ESG considerations?

The role is not only limited to legal and corporate governance. A general counsel now needs to have a business mind, a regulatory mind, a public relation skill and understand politics to ensure any legal guidance given factors all these angels as organisations in Kenya specifically are existing is a very dynamic landscape where all these factors and more have to be considered for business growth and success.
