Career Biography

Gregor Gessner is Regional Counsel Europe and Regional Compliance Officer at GATX Rail Europe, based in Vienna, where he oversees legal and compliance matters across multiple European jurisdictions. He joined GATX Rail Europe in 2018 and has since played a key role in establishing and further developing a pan-European legal and compliance function, providing business‑oriented legal advice to support the company’s operations as a leading railcar leasing provider. Gregor Gessner advises on a wide range of legal areas, including compliance, corporate law and M&A, corporate finance transactions, and complex commercial contracts, with a particular focus on long-term supply and service agreements. He is also involved in legal aspects of digitalisation and innovation projects, such as telematics and enterprise IT transformations.

Prior to joining GATX Rail Europe, Gregor Gessner held senior in‑house counsel positions at Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Hewlett‑Packard, including Country Counsel Austria and Channel Counsel for the DACH region, advising on technology law, commercial transactions, and compliance in an international corporate environment. He began his legal career in private practice with international law firms, including DLA Piper and Hausmaninger Kletter Rechtsanwälte. He holds a Doctor of Laws and a Master of Advanced Studies in Information Technology Law both from the University of Vienna and an LL.M. from New York University School of Law.

He is recognised for his business-driven, solution-oriented legal approach, emphasizing pragmatic risk assessment, cross-functional collaboration, and close alignment with operational and strategic priorities, thereby supporting informed decision-making in a complex, multi‑jurisdictional, and regulated environment.
