Leticia Escauriza González
Senior Legal Counsel | Grupo MAO
In an increasingly complex global environment, how are you helping your organization navigate risk while still supporting growth?
In a complex global environment, my role as a Legal Advisor is not to act as an obstacle to operations, but rather as a facilitator of a secure framework for the business group. My strategy for managing risks without sacrificing growth is based on the principle that legal certainty is the foundation that allows businesses to expand with confidence.
The most efficient way to manage risks is through active prevention by drafting robust contracts and documents, which I view as the primary tool for institutional protection. I understand that business demands speed, so my approach is to balance that dynamism with the necessary technical rigour, ensuring that every detail is covered without allowing the pace of the market to compromise the quality of legal analysis.
To support growth, my team works in synergy with the commercial department, integrating artificial intelligence to automate repetitive processes and low-complexity documentation. This automation provides us with operational agility and frees up my team’s capacity to focus on what adds the most value: detailed and strategic analysis for new business ventures or complex negotiations.
How has the role of General Counsel evolved in recent years, and where do you see GCs creating the most value today?
The role of the head of the in-house legal team has evolved from a control function to that of a key strategic partner. Over time, companies have integrated the in-house legal department into the core of their decision-making process, valuing its ability to align regulatory compliance with business objectives.
The greatest value we bring today is a cross-functional view of the business. By being immersed in day-to-day operations, we develop detailed knowledge of each area. This internal perspective gives us a comprehensive view and a deep understanding of the organisational culture, allowing us to offer more context-specific legal solutions.
How has AI changed the legal function recently (including in the past year), and how are you approaching it within your team?
Artificial intelligence has established itself as an extremely useful tool that is transforming the legal profession by significantly reducing response times, particularly in repetitive and routine tasks, while in more complex matters it serves as a valuable complementary tool for in-depth analysis. In our team, we address this change by integrating automation technologies that enhance our responsiveness, while always maintaining human oversight as a central pillar to ensure maximum accuracy and legal certainty.
How do you build and maintain a strong legal team?
To build and maintain a strong legal team, it is essential to attract talent that balances technical rigour with personal qualities, while consistently fostering a culture of continuous learning. Team cohesion stems from clear communication and individual empowerment, ensuring that every member feels like a valuable part of the organisation and sees a path to real growth. Ultimately, this strength is underpinned by deep trust among colleagues and a culture of genuine collaboration, where teamwork translates into the certainty that everyone is there to support one another.
